Homeless Shelters & Outreach
These organizations support people who are unsheltered, including cold-weather shelter openings when temperatures drop.
Shelter & Housing Support

- Thurman Brisben Center – Year-round homeless shelter with meals, case management, and support services (contact for intake).
- Hope House – Homeless shelter serving individuals/families with supportive services.
- Micah Ecumenical Ministries – Cold Weather Shelter activates when freezing/nighttime conditions occur (for men & women) — open at night to prevent exposure.
- Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care – Coordinated access point to connect people to shelters and services; call the Homelessness Helpline (540-358-5801) for referrals.
Assistance for Elderly & Disabled Residents
Energy & Heating Support
- Fuel & Crisis Heating Assistance
- Spotsylvania County Social Services offers fuel assistance and crisis heating support during winter months (through early March). Applications help with heating bills, furnace repairs, and fuel delivery for eligible households.
- EnergyShare / Heating & Cooling Assistance
- Through Salvation Army & state partners: helps eligible households with emergency heating costs in winter. Contact local offices for details and application assistance.
Senior Support Resources
- Local library and area agencies list programs such as Meals on Wheels, transportation services, errand support, and energy benefits for seniors and adults with disabilities.

Additional Help & Considerations
Community Warming Spots (Weather Dependent)
- Churches & community centers often open space for warming/meal services when cold weather hits — e.g., rotating hospitality meals at Micah Ministries locations.
- Public buildings (libraries, rec centers, government facilities) are considered safe indoor waiting areas during power outages or extreme cold (reach out to local governments for real-time openings).
Transportation & Accessibility
- Fredericksburg Regional Transit & Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging provide accessible transit options that may help seniors and disabled residents get to warming/shelter locations (schedule & availability vary).
