By Jenny Sites December 18, 2025

The Fredericksburg Arts Commission has announced an open call for artists to design and paint a brand-new mural on the Dorothy Hart Community Center, turning the side entrance of the building into a colorful, welcoming landmark for neighbors, families, and visitors to enjoy.

Why the Dorothy Hart Community Center?

Located at 408 Canal Street, the Dorothy Hart Community Center has been at the heart of Fredericksburg life for generations. Built in 1942, the building originally served as a USO and later became the community hub we know today.

Over the years, it has:

  • Welcomed service members home from war
  • Played a role in the city’s civil rights movement
  • Hosted social events, art shows, and civic gatherings

Today, the center is home to the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Events Department and continues to serve families through dance classes, youth camps, voting, community meetings, and more. It’s truly a place where Fredericksburg comes together.

About the Mural Project

The new mural will cover an exterior wall along the side entrance of the building, adding beauty and character to this residential area of the Canal Quarter neighborhood.

Important Info:

  • Local and regional artists who are 18 years or older can apply
  • The selected artist will receive $4,000 for labor and supplies
  • Initial proposals due: January 12, 2026
