In and around Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford, VA

By Jenny Sites May 1, 2025

Fishing is a fantastic way to spend quality time with your family, enjoy the outdoors, and create lasting memories. My son loves to go fishing with his grandfather so I've done a little research about fishing in our area.

Fortunately, Fredericksburg and the surrounding areas offer plenty of fishing spots that are perfect for anglers of all ages and experience levels. Here’s your guide to family fishing fun, including the best locations, bait recommendations, and helpful tips to make your day on the water a success.

Best Family-Friendly Fishing Spots

  1. Motts Run Reservoir
Motts Run Reservoir is a peaceful spot offering bank fishing, kayak rentals, and plenty of shaded picnic areas. It's well-stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish, making it ideal for kids and beginners.
  2. Lake Anna
Just a short drive from us, Lake Anna is a popular destination for family fishing trips. The lake is home to largemouth bass, striped bass, and crappie. Try the public fishing pier at Lake Anna State Park for easy access and family-friendly amenities like picnic tables and restrooms.
  3. Rappahannock River
The Rappahannock River offers great opportunities for catching smallmouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. Riverfront Park in downtown Fredericksburg provides easy access with walking trails and picnic spots nearby. Safety Tip: The Rappahannock River can have strong currents, especially after heavy rain.
  4. Old Cossey Pond
Located in the heart of Fredericksburg, this small pond is perfect for introducing young kids to fishing. Stocked with trout in the colder months, it’s a great place for beginners to try their luck. The City of Fredericksburg also hosts an annual Kids Fishing Day here. Best Bait and Tackle for Local Fish

Choosing the right bait can make all the difference in your fishing success. Here’s what works best for common fish in the area:

  • Largemouth Bass: Soft plastic worms, crankbaits, or live minnows
  • Bluegill & Sunfish: Worms, crickets, or small jigs
  • Catfish: Chicken liver, stink bait, or cut bait
  • Trout: PowerBait, corn, or small spinners

Licenses and Regulations

Before heading out, be sure to review Virginia’s fishing regulations. Children under 16 can fish without a license, but adults will need to purchase one. You can find details on licensing, seasons, and limits on the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources website.

Free Fishing Days in Virginia are June 6-8, 2025. No fishing license will be required for recreational rod and reel fishing during these days. Get additional details here.
