In and around Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford, VA

By Jenny Sites January 5, 2025

As winter weather approaches our area, we urge you to be careful.

Stay off the roads.

It is important that you stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. If you do drive,

  • clear off all windows
  • remove any snow on the roof that could become dislodged while driving. This snow could cover your windshield during a sudden stop or hit vehicles behind you.
  • clear off headlights and taillights so that you can see and others can see you.
  • Take extra provisions such as clothing, blankets, coats, boots, gloves, etc with you in addition to food and water for everyone in the vehicle in case you get stuck. It is also wise to take an emergency kit, flashlight, tarp and a flair or flashers in the event of an accident or a long wait for help.
  • take something to assist with traction, such as kitty litter (non-clumping) or sand.

Allow plows and emergency equipment plenty of space to maneuver.  Be sure to check 511.vdot.gov for real-time traffic information before leaving your home.

Check on neighbors who may be elderly or disabled.

Those who are elderly or disabled may be unprepared and/or unwilling to ask for help when needed.

Use caution when shoveling

Shoveling heavy snow as it can cause overexertion and even heart attacks.

Prevent frostbite.

When leaving the house be sure to cover your hands, feet and face in addition to wearing layers to prevent frostbite. Do not stay in wet clothing as it causes you to lose body heat faster.

 Allow for proper ventilation.

If you need a generator, grill, propane or gas heater, remember that these devices cannot be used in an enclosed area. Each of these items requires proper ventilation and should not be used in the home including the garage or basement.  If you must use these items be certain that you have new batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarms plus a working fire extinguisher.
