Balancing academics and athletics can be very hard and stressful. I know firsthand that stress can affect performance in both areas, but by time management, prioritization, and discipline, you can succeed in both, so here are some tips for doing just that.

1)Time Management:

Time management is arguably the most important skill needed to balance academics and athletics. I believe all student-athletes should have some form of schedule, whether it be a planner, sticky notes, or an online resource. Whichever you choose, it should include things such as practices and gamedays, workouts, exams, and assignment due dates. Having a visual of these things can help you to be on time and adequately prepared.

2) Prioritize:

Another equally important skill is prioritization, sometimes you have to prioritize one thing over another which can be hard. It is important to communicate with your teachers and coaches, asking for assignment extensions is something you may need to do. During exam periods, it may be essential to prioritize your academics while conversely during an intense season, you may need to prioritize your sport.

3) Study Habits:

Having adequate study habits is essential. Your school most likely offers tutors and other academic help if you're struggling, if not there are many free online resources you can use. When a big exam is coming up it's important to prioritize studying to ensure passing.

4) Student before Athletics

Lastly, it's always important to remember that for student-athletes, the student part always comes first. If you get too overwhelmed, have a conversation with your coach. Another important thing to remember is your own physical and mental health matters, your performance will be affected by both of these if you ignore them.
