What exactly is a microschool, you may ask?
A microschool is a small learning environment that prioritizes personalized, student-directed learning. At Iaomai Academy, located right here in Fredericksburg, we offer a unique learning experience for children in grades 3-8. Our small cohort size and individualized curriculum options allow students to learn at their own pace, while also providing opportunities for socialization and enrichment. The Iaomai model is appropriate for current homeschool students and students transitioning from public or private schools.
But that's not all - Iaomai Academy also welcomes grade 9 students who may benefit from our nurturing environment to thrive academically and personally. Our microschool celebrates and supports individual learning styles and social-emotional well-being, with three hours of academics broken up with breaks, enrichment, and socialization opportunities.

The founder of Iaomai Academy, Shavonne, brings over 5 years of experience in K-12 independent schools as a registrar, academic adviser, and students with disabilities coordinator. As someone with a learning difference herself, Shavonne is passionate about helping students with learning differences and social-emotional needs recognize their potential and thrive in a positive, relaxed environment where they are truly seen, heard, and accepted.
In addition, Iaomai Academy is part of the KaiPod Catalyst accelerator program for education entrepreneurs, with a partnership with the National Accelerator for Autism Charter Schools. This partnership provides resources and training for supporting the education of children on the Autism Spectrum. Additionally, we are proud members of the National Microschooling Center and Vela Founder Network, further enhancing our commitment to excellence in education.
We offer flexible enrollment plans, including 2, 3, and 5-day options, with shortened, virtual Fridays to allow families to explore outside interests or spend more time together. Iaomai Academy in-person attendance will be capped at 5 students a day, but we are gathering interest from families open to a virtual option or a hybrid experience where their child can interact with in-person students synchronously. If there is enough demand, we will implement hybrid learning as soon as possible.
Our small size enables our learning coaches to truly get to know each child as an individual and recognize when they need additional support. Our learning coaches are dedicated to guiding and supporting students as they work through their individual curriculums, ensuring that each child reaches their full potential.
