Tax Free Weekend Returns to Virginia for 2024

Last year Virginia didn't get a Tax Free weekend, but it's back for 2024! This means you pay zero sales tax when you purchase eligible items between Friday, August 2, and Sunday, August 4, 2024. 

The tax-free days include the following tax-free items:

  • School supplies ($20 or less per item)
    • Binders
    • Folders
    • Composition Books
    • Notebooks and legal pads
    • Pencils, pens, crayons, markers, etc.
    • Book bags
    • Lunch boxes
    • Musical Instruments, accessories, and sheet music
    • Paintbrushes, paints, art paper, sketchbooks
    • Workbooks
    • Tissues
    • Protractors, rulers
    • Reference books, maps, and globes

  • Clothing and footwear for all ages ($100 or less per item)
    • Shirts, hoodies, jerseys, shorts, skirts, pants, jeans, etc
    • Shoes, socks, hosiery, belts, scarfs
    • Jackets, sweaters, coats, gloves
    • Uniforms
    • Undergarments
    • Suits
    • Neckwear
    • Wedding apparel (non-rented)
    • Swimwear
    • Costumes (non-rented)
    • Labcoats, coveralls, rubber pants, etc.
    • Etc.

  • Hurricane preparedness items ($60 or less each)
    • Batteries
    • Flashlights
    • Weather Radios
    • Tarps / waterproof plastic
    • Ratchet straps
    • Carbon Monoxide and Smoke detectors
    • Fire extinguishers
    • Food and water storage containers
    • Coolers
    • Bottled water
    • First Aid Kits

  • Gas powered Chainsaws ($350 or less each)

  • Chainsaw accessories ($60 or less per item)

  • Portable generators ($1000 or less each)
  • Energy Star products ($2,500 or less per item)  purchased for non-commercial use.
    • Air Conditioners
    • Ceiling fans
    • Light Bulbs
    • Dishwashers
    • Refrigerators
    • Dehumidifiers
    • Washing machines
