National Kitten Day, celebrated annually on July 10th, is a day that celebrates and raises adoption awareness for the cute and cuddly creatures. Colleen Paige, an animal advocate, established this national holiday. Paige’s goal when establishing this day was to “show people kittens can bring magic and joy into people's lives.”

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), is an organization that brings awareness and plays a huge role in providing shelter and care to kittens in need. In my brief interview with Von Young, the director of communications for the SPCA, I asked how many kittens they took each year; the number was 400-500. Just last month they took in 137!

Even if you aren't looking to adopt a kitten, in awareness for this day, you can still donate. They are always in need of items such as wet kitten food and kitten milk replacement, they are also in need of countertop scales, and “Snuggle Safe” discs. They also have an Amazon wish list which you can locate here

The SPCA loves it when families get involved, so they provide a Kitten BINGO wishlist to have family fun around town. Print out the BINGO page, donate the items listed along with the BINGO card, and for every row you complete, you will be entered into a drawing to win a fun prize!

Something I learned from the SPCA is that if you find a litter of kittens that looks healthy, they should be left alone. If the kittens don't look injured or in danger, it's best to leave them. This is because more often than not, there's a momma cat alone keeping them fed, and if you take them away from that, the mortality rate can increase by 40%.
