To enter Kindergarten in Virginia next fall, a child must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2024.
Each county has different instructions, so be sure to read the information the for county you live in.
Spotsylvania County Public Schools:
SCPS Parents need to pre-register each child for school. Read the Step-By-Step Instructions first for important instructions. Once you have read the instructions, you can pre-register your child on ParentVUE. You can find additional information and links HERE.
Once your child is pre-registered, you will need to take the necessary paperwork to your child's school.

Stafford County Schools
Register your child for school using THIS link. Questions can be answered by calling Central Office at (540) 658-6000.
You will need to provide the school with the following information:
- Proof of Residency (View the complete list of documents required for enrollment.)
- Official birth certificate
- A transfer slip or report card from a previous school
- A copy of the current IEP and reports if the student has been receiving special education services
- A physical examination report completed within one year of school entry for grades K-5. Any students entering or returning to school in the United States must also furnish a physical examination done within one year.
- School Entrance Health Form MCH-213G
- School Entrance Health Information (health history)
- Completed TB Risk Assessment Form, negative skin test or chest x-ray
- Proof of legal custody when applicable
City of Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg City Schools host Kindergarten Registration nights:
You will need to bring the following items to Registration Night:
- Birth Certificate (original, not a copy) or passport (if not a US citizen)
- Photo ID of parent/guardian
- Proof of City Residency (mortgage or lease and one current utility bill)
- Immunization Record / School entrance Physical Exam (dated within 1 year of entering school for the first time). This must be on a State Health Form (obtain from your pediatrician, the Fredericksburg Health Department or FCPS Registrar's Office)
- Completed registration forms. These forms can be found at fxbgschools.us.

🎒Delayed Enrollment: If you do not feel that your child is emotionally or mentally ready to attend Kindergarten, and your child will not have turned six on or before September 30th of the school year, you may choose to delay Kindergarten enrollment. To do this, you will need to contact your school board to let them know you are postponing enrollment for one year. (Va Code § 22.1-254(H)(5) of the Code.)
