When winter temperatures arrive in Virginia it's important to know how to adjust your home to get the most out of your heating system. Here are a few suggestions to maximize your warmth and minimize the costs.
1) Use your fireplace to warm the room that you are in, rather than turning up the thermostat in the entire house. But before starting your fireplace, you should have it checked by a professional.
2) Make sure that your doors and windows are shut tightly. Check for leaks and replace old stripping or caulk.
3) Keep your furnace air filter clean. A dirty or clogged filter can make your furnace work harder, which costs you more.
4) Use your window drapes and shades to maximize heating benefits. Open shades during the day to let the sunlight in and keep shades closed at night to conserve heat.
5) Check your attic vents and fans and be sure they are closed during the winter. You should also check your attic's insulation to be sure you have enough. Much of the heat escaping your home exits through the attic.
6)Humid air feels warmer than dry air, so add a humidifier to your home. Increasing the humidity of your home can also help resist winter colds and moisturize dry skin.
