"What Doesn't Kill You" by Tessa Miller is a perfect example of me selecting a book exclusively by the cover. I was killing time at my favorite Independent book store during kid sports practice and the cover art caught my eye and then the title intrigued me. <twist my arm>

"Empathy is more than putting yourself in someone else's shoes; it's using your power to fight for change that don't directly benefit you. It's more than understanding why another person feels the way they do; it's about learning the systems that contribute to their emotions and behaviors, then figuring out how you can help build or dismantle and rebuild those systems. What good is putting yourself in someone else's shoes if you're going to stand immobile in them instead of figuring out how to run?"

Three in five adults in the United States suffer from a chronic disease. Even if you aren't one of them, these diseases impact every one of us.

The author dives deep into her own chronic illness, but the overarching message is applicable to any chronic illness. By telling her story, she attempts to reach both those with chronic illness (offering a whole appendix of well-researched resources) as well as the family/friends/support system of the patients.

Whitney is a wife, mom, and avid reader. She is working on reading a stack of books this year and happily sharing a synopsis so we can find our favorites!
