Consignment Sale Shopping Tips

in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Stafford, VA

By Jenny Sites March 10, 2022

Since my oldest was little I have been shopping consignment sales. I love shopping the sales for a number of reasons. First, the prices are great! Sometimes I even find items that are new with tags and things I can use for gifts for my kids.  I also enjoy being able to shop for all kinds of things - clothing, shoes, books, movies, games, sporting equipment, toys, bedding, equipment, accessories, and more all in one place. Mostly I love that by shopping consignment, I'm supporting other local parents who are selling their gently used clothing and items.

* Shop early and find the best deals! Most large consignment sales allow volunteers and consigners to shop early. Sometimes they also have special early shopping for new parents, teachers, emergency responders, and military. Check their schedule to see if you qualify to shop early.

*You’re going to want to have your hands free to grab the bargains! Bring a bag to carry your items as you shop. Some sales also allow you to bring a wagon to shop. Be sure to put your name on your wagon so no one thinks it's for sale.

* Make a list of what you need and what sizes (clothing & shoes) your kids wear. I find it helpful to also measure the kids and carry a cloth measuring tape with me to the sale. Sizes don't run the same between brands so it's the easiest way to make sure the clothing will fit.  Looking for specific items? Write those down too. You don’t want to forget anything!

*Take help.  Big consignment sales can be overwhelming, plus it's always more fun to shop with a friend. Consider taking your mom or a friend with you to help you shop. Sometimes it's nice to have a second opinion too.

*Don't take the kids.  If you can manage to have someone watch your kids while you're shopping, that's a big help. It's so much easier to shop kid free, plus often times lines are long with not much for kids to do.

*Do take your time. Plan to be at the sale for a number of hours. It takes time to sort through the racks.

*Make a plan. If you have specific sizes or items that you're looking for, start shopping in that section.

* If you love it, don't leave it.  If you think it's great and a good deal, someone else will too.

*Review. you think you're finished, step to the side and go through your items.  Check to make sure you didn't miss a stain or hole and be sure to check that the size on the clothing matches the size on the label. Remember, a busy mom was entering the info on the tag and we all make mistakes, but you don't want to get home with clothing that you can't use. Sort your shopping into 2 piles - one for those you love and one for those you like. That makes it easier to decide if you need everything.

*Decide on a budget. It's easy to get excited and buy everything you see, but if you know how much you can afford, it will make it a lot easier to put back those items you aren't in love with.

*Be prepared to stand in line for a long time. While the consignment sales usually have a good system to keep the line moving, there typically is a long line of parents with their wagons full of good deals.

* Check to see if there is a discount day during the sale. Make a list of items you're on the fence about so you can come back on sale day to see if they are still available.

*Have fun!
