On the last Monday of May, we celebrate Memorial Day by honoring those who have died while serving in the military. Many people wear a red poppy flower on Memorial Day. You can find out about the poetic inspiration behind that here.
This Memorial Day, here are a few ways that you and your family can pay tribute to the fallen:
1. Raise the Flag: Proper flag etiquette for Memorial Day is to raise your flag to peak, then lower it to half-staff. Fly your American flag at half-staff until noon. At noon the flag should be raised for the remainder of the day.
2. Moment of Silence: The National Moment of Remembrance for Memorial Day is 3:00 pm. Set a reminder on your phone and take a moment to reflect.
3. Make a patriotic craft or recipe.
4. Attend a local Memorial Day Event.
5. Visit a historical site. Take a tour of a local historic battlefield, visit a soldier's memorial, or check out a museum. Get a personal look at the sacrifices our servicemen made.
Most importantly, spend time together as a family remembering the meaning of this important day and showing respect to those who have given their lives in service to the country. It's a great time to teach your children about our county's rich history, the importance of freedom, and the sacrifices that have been made to make the USA what it is today.
