The Fredericksburg Area Running Club is happy to announce that the 2021 Race is on!

By Fredericksburg Area Running Club April 1, 2021

2021 will mark the 27th year for the Great Train Race! The race, held in downtown Fredericksburg, has become a tradition for young runners throughout the area. Over the last several months the Fredericksburg Area Running Club (runfarc.com) has been working hard to plan a fun event in the safest manner possible. Traditionally the race is run in May but had to be moved to June 6th to allow more time for planning based on a very dynamic environment.

There are 3 distances for runners of all abilities:

  • The 1 mile Express for runners 6 to 17.
  • The half-mile George Dashington for runners 12 and under.
  • The quarter-mile Caboose Run for runners 5 and under.

The race will run completely on Sophia Street ending under the railroad bridge.  All participants will receive a medal and shirt. Additionally, there will be prizes for the top overall finishers and age group winners in the 1-mile Express. To provide a safe environment for runners we are taking the following steps:

  • Masks will be required at the start area and at the finish but not while running
  • Runners in the 1-mile Express who are 11 and up will start in waves of 25 runners
  • All other live events will release a single runner at a time
  • A virtual race option is available as well
  • No onsite awards ceremony will be conducted to reduce gatherings

For the registration link and for additional information visit the race website at gtr.runfarc.com.

Proceeds from the race will support Loisann’s Hope House (loisannshopehouse.org) a local non-profit that helps homeless children and their families.
