1) Skip Counting - using like coins, teach your child that coins can be added together by skip counting. Ex. give you child 6 dimes and show them to count by 10s to find out the value of the 6 dimes is 60 cents.
2) Play Store - set up a pretend store at home and give your child real money. Let them shop at the pretend store and use their real money to purchase items.
3) Sell snacks - Give your child a set amount of money at the beginning of each week. Put prices on the snacks in the pantry and let them "buy" snacks each day. This will teach them the value of money and how to save money for the things they want.
4) Scavenger Hunt - Let your child find 5 items at the store (or during COVID, in the store sale flyer) and have them compare the items. Show them that while these items all cost the same amount of money, some items might be more important to purchase than other items. Show your child that a box of cereal, a bag of cheese sticks and 5 apples all cost the same and ask them which item they would spend their money on if they could only buy one.
5) Board Games - play a board game that uses money. Help your child count out the money that each player starts with. Be patient and let your child count out the money as you play the game. Help them make change for their money or trade in smaller bills for bigger bills as the game progresses. Could your money purposefully and out load as you make your purchases. Maybe even make a mistake while you're counting to see if they catch it. Kids LOVE to catch their parents mistakes!
6) Save your Money In a Bank - The Chancellor Lions Club, in partner with Carter Bank & Trust, is currently hosting their annual The Big Oink! Contest. Help your kids learn money management, promote savings and get creative by making their very own piggy bank. Banks are due March 27th. Get the details here: The Big Oink
