Hard Boiled Eggs - The Peel Deal!

Tips and Tricks for perfectly boiled and peeled eggs

By Jenny Sites July 16, 2020

I posted this photo on Facebook asking for some advice on how to get the perfect peeled, hard-boiled egg – and boy did you all come through! I never knew there were so many ways to make hard-boiled eggs so I thought I’d put them all together so you can find your favorite.

These are the top 7 “tried-and-true” boil and peel methods you shared:

(1) Start the water boiling, add 2 TSP of vinegar and boil for 10 minutes. Dump the water and put in an ice bath until cooled, then peel. – Gina Murray

(2) InstaPot for 5-6 minutes on cook with 2-3 cups of water (using the rack insert) – Simone Kerr

(3) Bake your eggs in a muffin tin at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove and put immediately in an ice bath for 10 minutes. – Sarah Dickinson

(4) Add baking soda to your boiling water. Boil the eggs, remove from the stove and let list for 12-15 minutes. Rinse in cold water and peel. – Patricia Holloway

(5) Boil the eggs, run them under cold water. Using a mason jar, put just enough water to cover the egg, insert the egg and shake. The peel will slide off. – Allison R. Moody

(6) Boil the water first. Put the eggs in the boiling water using a slotted spoon. Cover pot to return to boil for 13 minutes. Remove and place in cold water. – Lindsey Slivka

(7) Pressure cooker for 5 minutes with a 5 minute natural release. 5 minutes in ice water. – Matthew Minneman

TIPS: Lots of you mentioned using eggs that are older - at least a week.  Other tips include adding things to the water – salt, baking soda, vinegar plus most people suggested an ice bath before peeling.  Basically all of these techniques use science to separate the shell from the egg white, thus making it easier to peel. (Great experiment for your kids to try! Which one works best?)

So, now your eggs are perfectly boiled and peeled … what are you going to make?  Here are some suggestions:

  • Deviled eggs -There are lots of different ways that people make deviled eggs. Here are a couple for you to try:
    • Place the yellow centers in a bowl and smash them with a fork. Add mayonnaise, vinegar, mustard, salt, and pepper, and mix well. Spoon into egg whites and sprinkle the tops with paprika, bacon, chives or goat cheese.
    • Place the yellow centers in a bowl and smash them with a fork. Add whipped dressing and mix until you get a thick texture. Add a small squirt of mustard and sweet relish.

  • Fancy deviled egg boats – top your deviled egg with a triangle chip (I like cool ranch!) or use a toothpick to make a “sail” using a thinly sliced cucumber or pepper.

  • Egg Salad - There are also lots of recipes for egg salad, but here are a couple we have tried:
    • Chop egg whites and yellows and place in bowl. Add mayonnaise, yellow mustard, chopped green onion and paprika.
    • Chop egg whites and yellows and place in a bowl. Add mayonnaise, minced dill, dijon mustard, chives, salt and pepper.

  • Egg salad sandwich - use the egg salad above and put it on bread, toast, potato roll or a Hawaiian roll.

  • Beet pickled eggs: 15 ounces of beets in juice, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup of water and 1/4 tsp of cinnamon. Place all ingredients in a pan and bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Placed the boiled, peeled eggs in a jar and pour the mixture over them. Place the lid on the jar and refrigerate overnight.

  • Stuffed Eggs: Remove the yellow centers and stuff the egg whites with tuna, chicken salad, avocado, guacamole or even pumpkin!

  •  Add them to your potato salad. Cut them in slices or cubes and add them to the top or mix them in.

  • Top your Cobb Salad. Use an egg slicer to make them pretty.

  • Sprinkle some salt on it and eat it!
