Q: What is your name and what is the name of your business?
A: Adrian M. Silversmith, owner of Sprelly
Q: What inspired or encouraged you to start your business?
A: It was late June 2013 that my wife Casey, our two daughters Remy (9) and Charlotte (7), and I went to a frozen yogurt shop. I tried the peanut butter flavored froyo and had my A-HA! moment; "what if there were different flavored peanut butters & jellies, and you can mix & match them and add other goodies?!" One week after I had the idea, I was unexpectedly let go from my long term sales career. Luckily, the inaugural Made In FredVA Business contest was 3 months later and I found myself pitching the concept in Dodd Auditorium in front of 200 people. I won the "People's Choice Award" and in the spring of 2014, started making peanut butter in my home and we were selling at local farmers markets. Been grinding it out ever since!
Q: What do you love about your work?
A: I love the face-to-face interaction with our customers. I personally feel Sprelly invokes a sense of fun, love, and deliciousness. Being able to share that with others is incredible.
Q: What advice do you have for others wanting to start a business?
A: Be steadfast in your vision and know you will get in sticky situations and encounter a few jams; but, you must have the optimism and confidence to keep grinding it out, no matter how nuts it gets!
Q: What do you do to take care of yourself and how do you make time to do it?
A: I try to do simple things in 15-20 minute intervals throughout the day that almost anyone can do. It might start with working out at home by doing pushups, situps, and pullups or I will go outside and walk silently barefoot in the grass. I also play guitar and piano and often meditate before bedtime. I can't help but laugh at all that but it's true! I've learned a lot about meditation and self care and how it's important to connect with oneself, with what works for you.
Q: What can we do to support you in the community?
A: Please keep spreading the Sprelly love! This community has embraced us as their own and we are so proud to be a part of it. It's often humbling when we encounter anyone who recognizes us and we are super grateful. Anytime someone purchases Sprelly or shares Sprelly with others, it helps us in tremendous ways and allows us to give back to this community.
