It's Cool To Be Kind

Book Review: The Cool Bean

By Jenny Sites December 12, 2019

It started with The Bad Seed, then there was The Good Egg and now we have The Cool Bean! This awesome book series by Jory John and Pete Oswald combines fun characters with great life lessons!

The Cool Bean explains how sometimes we have friends and although we may drift apart for a while, in the end we’re still there for each other.  It shows that small acts of kindness, like helping someone pick up a spilled lunch rather than laughing at them, or helping someone up when they fall, can go a long way.  It's not just about the instant act of kindness or feeling good about helping someone, but also the lasting impact your small act has on the recipient.

This Cool Bean is a great way to start a conversation with your kids about empathy, kindness and what it truly means to be “cool”.  This book follows The Bad Seed, which teaches that positive change is possible for everyone and The Good Egg which teaches life balance and accepting others.

I suggest that everyone grab a copy of this book to read to your kids. Follow it up with good conversation at your next meal and ask how they were able to demonstrate their “cool” kindness for others this week!

Macaroni Kid Fredericksburg hosted a free story time at the Spotsylvania Towne Centre to introduce this new book! All of the kids who joined us had a great time. The kids wore their Cool Bean glasses and enjoyed story time. We made our own “Cool Beans” from paper plates and wrote kind messages on post cards to send to unsuspecting teachers, friends and family. To tie in with the theme of kindness, school and giving, we also collected non-perishable food items for our local Panda Pantry! (Thank you so much to everyone who donated!) After reading the story, all of the kids were excited to offer me help in setting up the crafts and later cleaning them up. What a great bunch of Cool Beans!

I was compensated for my review but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
