Grandparent’s Day is always celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day – this year it will be on September 9th. Grandparents bring wisdom and joy into our lives!
Here is a list of ideas for you to celebrate your grandparents:
- Make them a home-made card
- Bake them a special treat
- Take them flowers or a plant
- Choose a beautiful photo frame, or make your own. This is one holiday that it’s ok to give someone a photo of yourself!
- Make them a gift – something with hand prints is always fun because everyone can see how much each little hand grows each year.
You can also do some fun activities with your grandparents:
- Interview your grandparents. They have so many things to share with you, there is no way you won’t discover something new! Grandparents tell the best stories.
- Cook with them. Ask them to show you their favorite recipe and help them make it.
- Play a board game. Let them pick a favorite or teach them one of yours.
- Take them for a drive through a National Park. (see the article on free kid's admission here)
- Take a walk.
- Go fishing.
- Look through old photo albums.
- Take them out to eat at their favorite restaurant.
Don’t have grandparents nearby? Give them a call!
Plus, why not stop by the local Nursing home or assisted living center and take a few minutes to visit with the elderly living in your community? They will remember your thoughtfulness and you might just make a new friend!
Grandparent’s day fun fact: In 1978 President Jimmy Carter declared the first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparent’s Day.*
