With Halloween only a couple of weeks away, you might be in skeleton and haunted house mode. But don’t forget about books! Here are three spooktacular books that will give your readers a thrill.
Mary McScary
Author: R.L. Stine
Illustrator: Marc Brown
Scholastic’s newest Halloween book is Mary McScary. This book is for ages 4-8. Mary loves to be SCARY! She can scare her parents but she cannot scare her cousin, Harry McScary. Join Mary as she tries to find some way to scare Harry. This funny picture book utilizes rhyme, alliteration, and imagery to keep kids and parents reading. While the book falls under the genre of Mystery and Horror on the Scholastic website, there is nothing actually scary involved. The animals mentioned are ones that are familiar to kids, and there are funny twists to lighten the mood.

Llamas in Pajamas
Author: Russell Punter
Illustrator: David Semple
Usborne Books and More’s Phonics Reader, Llamas in Pajamas, is a wonderful Halloween story for ages 4 and up. Frankie invites his friends over for a Halloween sleepover. They tell ghost stories and stay up late, trying not to get scared. The suspense builds until the door cracks open and instead of being scared of what is there, Frankie and his friends are delighted with a treat. The focus on similar vowel sounds and rhymes makes this book easy to read and understand. With vivid pictures and an “About Phonics” page in the back of the book, this is a wonderful title to add to any Halloween library.

Illustrated Ghost Stories
Various Authors
Illustrated by: Jose Emorca Flores
Usborne Books and More takes ghost stories to the next level with the book, Illustrated Ghost Stories. This collection of 13 ghost stories features tales of spirits, ghosts, and other ghoulish monsters. While the age recommendation is for 8+, parents should use their own judgment when purchasing the book since these stories are meant to be scary. The short nature of the stories makes this book excellent for campfires, sleepovers, and even bedtime stories (if you aren’t scared of the dark!). Grab your flashlight and get ready for a chilling read!

Emily Wessel became an Usborne Books and More Consultant in June of 2017. After attending online parties, hosting her own party, and then seeing how much her son loved the books (all of them, not just one collection), she decided to join in on the fun. Emily loves to help parents find the perfect book for their readers.
