Kenmore Park is located in downtown Fredericksburg off Kenmore Avenue. Its actual name is Memorial Recreation Park (according to fredericksburgva.gov). Kenmore Park is known for having two full playgrounds, one for 2-5 year olds and one for 6 and up; plenty of open space to run around; tennis courts; and picnic areas. It is close to the Canal Path so families can plan a full day of walking, playing, and relaxing.
My favorite part of Kenmore Park is not listed on the website or in the information above. And I only really know how special it is because my 4-year-old son is obsessed with it. The most amazing part of Kenmore Park is….the giant hill. You may be laughing, but hear me out.
The giant hill has much to offer:
1. Exercise- My little one loves to swing. Every time we go to a park, all he wants to do it swing. I love swinging as well, but part of the reason I believe parents take their kids to the park is to burn some energy. Try running up and down the hill a couple of times after your kid, and you (and your kid) will probably be out of breath. You can work on balance, speed/racing, trying different paths (on the leaves vs. on the dirt), etc.
2. Time- It not only gets your kid moving, it allows them to explore and stay outside. So much of a child’s time is spent indoors and sitting. Kids need time to be outside and see what is in the world around them. Spending time outside with your kid shows them that you value and appreciate the little things in life, like climbing a hill.
3. Fun-The giant hill is perfect for hide and seek. There is a little cave area that my son loves to hide in (even though I can see him). Running around and chasing him up and down the hill lead to so much laughter. I have to admit that my husband and I have both fallen while playing, but it makes him love it even more.
Kenmore Park is a great park for all ages. It’s shaded, provides open space, and offers a relaxing atmosphere. I highly recommend the park, and challenge you to a giant hill race!
