5 Tips for Keeping Kids Healthy This Flu Season

By Lindsey Williams, PA-C January 11, 2017
Flu season is here!  Here are a few reminders to help keep your family healthy this cold and flu season:

  • Wash your hands. I can not stress this enough! Instill good hand washing habits in your kiddos at a young age. Keep fingernails cut short. Soap and water is preferable to hand sanitizer, but alcohol based hand sanitizer is fine if you do not have access to soap and water. Make sure kids get their hands nice and sudsy as the scrubbing/bubble action is what washes germs away.
  • Cough and sneeze into your sleeve/elbow or use a tissue and then wash your hands or use alcohol based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep hands away from the mouth, nose, and eyes.  This is how unclean hands spread germs and lead to things like colds, the flu, and pink eye.
  • Get plenty of sleep.  You need adequate rest for your immune system to do its job!
  • Stay home, if possible, from work or school to limit the spread of germs!
