Grow Your Own Lettuce

Indoor gardening fun with the kids!

By Jennifer Hill October 3, 2024

A few weeks ago I saw a video about growing lettuce from the cores of romaine lettuce. Since my kids take salad for lunch at least three days a week, I quickly had three cores to use. We were all so surprised at how quickly it sprouted up! It was amazing – in about 10 days we had fresh lettuce to use for the kids' lunch salads!
What you need:
Core from romaine lettuce
Small containers
Water

What you do:
1. Tear or cut the core off the lettuce, leaving about 3 inches.
2. Place the core into about an inch of water in a small container and set it out on the counter near a window.
3. Change the water every 3 to 4 days.
4. In 8 to 10 days, cut the fresh lettuce off and use it! My kids were so excited to have salad that they grew at home in the kitchen.
