No matter how you slice it, Fredericksburg is a great place for pizza. Hand tossed dough, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese were just meant to blend together. Pizza in Fredericksburg is such a popular meal choice that there are over 72 establishments to “grab a slice” within 15 miles of Fredericksburg City. Whether you are serving it at your next play date or planning a family pizza night, I hope you enjoy this list of pizza superlatives and try these top picks of family-owned and operated restaurants.

Best of Fredericksburg, Family Owned Pizza Restaurants:
  • Best Cheese: Castiglia’s Italian Restaurant, Brothers Pizza, and Vinny’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria
  • Best Toppings and Specialty Pizzas: Primavera Pizzeria & Grill and Basilico New York Deli
  • Best Value: Primavera Pizzeria & Grill
There is no shortage of wonderful things to say about Primavera Pizzeria & Grill. For over ten years, they have made and delivered outstanding Greek and Italian food to the Fredericksburg area. On merits alone, Primavera deserves to be part of the “Best Family Owned Pizza of Fredericksburg” guide but did I mention that they also have an amazing Buy One, Get One offer? Any day of the week, buy one 12-inch medium pizza or one 16-inch extra-large pizza, and get the next one of equal or lesser value absolutely free! This way my kids can get their usual cheese pizza (for free) and my husband and I get either the “Mediterranean” or the “Meat Supreme.” The “Mediterranean” is a symphony of artichokes, tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and Feta cheese while the “Meat Supreme” blends all of your favorite proteins, pepperoni, sausage, ham, ground beef, and bacon, into one winning combination. It is cozy and family-oriented inside with a Grecian mural painted across the walls.  The owner Rami is a Macaroni Kid reader who shares my opinion about the Mediterranean Pizza and also recommends their “White Pizza,” featuring a garlic sauce on top of their fresh dough, smothered with Ricotta, Mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses. The restaurant is at 600 William Street and backs up to LibertyTown Arts Workshop.

Basilico New York Deli is another great family option, with brick oven pizza and a New York deli feel. It offers a unique opportunity to dine on pizza as well as non-pizza items in case you are sharing a meal with people that do not “feel like pizza.” Their menu is extensive featuring pasta dishes, sandwiches, Paninis, salads, and more. I cannot resist the Potato and Rosemary pizza. Imagine thin crust, potatoes drizzled in olive oil, Rosemary, large lumps of Ricotta cheese, and Asiago cheese.  It’s a wonderfully tasting masterpiece that will not disappoint. All of their pizzas come in just one 12-inch size (each is under $10 with the exception of the Fontina Arugula and Prosciutto pizza for $11.99) with the exception of the Kids, 8-inch pizza which is sold for only $4.99.  Please be sure to save room for dessert so you don’t miss out on their assorted Italian desserts and cannoli. I cannot say enough nice things about Maria their pastry chef.  Her desserts not only look but also taste amazing and I guarantee that your little ones will not be able to take their eyes off the Gelato counter. Basilico’s also serves a wide range of beverages including espresso, cappuccino, gelato milkshakes, beer, and wine. Visit them at 2557 Cowan Boulevard, just behind Mary Washington Hospital and find them at www.basilicodeli.com

Want to know of another family-owned pizza place tucked away and almost hidden in the Spotsylvania Shopping Center? Brothers Pizza is indeed a local favorite that you must try. Just to warn you in advance, they only accept cash or checks, no credit cards, and they do not have a website. Fortunately, there is an ATM on site and the pizza is absolutely delicious. It’s a very simple restaurant, order at the counter kind of place, but their New York-fashioned pizza is amazing. No matter what you order, it will be wonderful. You can dine in at one of their seven tables or carry out when you visit them at 3605 Plank Road.

Vinny’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria is your authentic Italian restaurant with plenty of seasonings deliciously flavoring your pizza. A caricature of Vinny the owner appears on each pizza box and the inside of the restaurant is reminiscent of your typical Italian restaurant, red and white checkered table cloths with Parmesan cheese and red pepper shakers on each table. Vinny’s has four different locations within a 15 mile radius of Fredericksburg City and while I cannot write on behalf of each Vinny’s location, I can tell you that the 11105 Leavells Road location in Spotsylvania and the Ferry Farm location at 201 Kings Highway in Fredericksburg are among my favorites. In total, there are four Vinny’s run by the original owner, Vinny Vitale, and an additional 6 franchises. If you’re willing to try something new, the “West Coast” specialty pizza is superb featuring pineapple, bacon, and Mozzarella in a white sauce spread over Vinny’s hand-made dough. For an upscale dining experience that proudly serves pizza, try Castiglia’s Italian Restaurant, at 324 William Street in downtown Fredericksburg. It is known for its exceptional food and brick over pizza.  astiglia’s has a full bar and an extensive list of signature cocktails and martinis, including a Happy Hour every night of the week.   With regular Wine Dinners and a back room for parties, this downtown staple continuously meets the needs of the Fredericksburg community whether you are seeking a date night out or an after-school, family pizza experience.   Perhaps consider signing up for their email distribution list to be invited to their Wine Dinners and other special events.
