National Park and Federal Lands grant free passes

The National Parks and the Federal Recreation Lands have created a FREE pass for active duty military members and their dependents effective Saturday, May 19.  This pass will cover the per vehicle charge at parks that charge per vehicle or the per person charge for the pass owner and three additional passengers.  There are even rules providing for motorcyclist and bicyclist. You can find them at the USGS frequently asked questions page.

The pass is not good for extra amenity charges like boat launches or camping.

Saturday, May 19 - Safety First Regional Car Seat Campaign

Families with children receiving Medicaid will be eligible to receive a free convertible or booster car seat as well as training on proper car seat use and installation assistance. To receive a free car seat, parents must register in advance and bring their child’s Medicaid card with them to the event.

In fields all over Spotsylvania County men fought for their lives as the Northern Troops attempted to destroy the South’s Army and break the Confederates as they headed toward the Confederate Capitol of Richmond. On May 19 & 20, 2012, battles will once again rage near Spotsylvania Courthouse during the Battles of Spotsylvania, 2012 Civil War Reenactment.

Saturday, May 26 - Fredericksburg National Cemetery Illumination

The National Cemetery will be lit by more than 15,000 luminary candles to represent each soldier buried within. NPS interpreters will share stories from the cemetery along a set path, or visitors can walk through the cemetery at their own pace. This year's program will focus on stories from 1862 for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Each year this program promises to be an extraordinary, moving event.
Where: The Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center is located at 1013 Lafayette Boulevard. Take exit 130A from I-95. Drive east on Route 3 for approximately 2 miles. Turn left at the traffic light at Lafayette Boulevard (US 1 Business). Proceed approximately 1/2 mile. The visitor center is on the left.  The zip code is 22401.

Eat Local, Eat Well, Eat Together


Stop by your local Farmer's Market and then Get Creative

The Farmer's Markets are up and running again.  What a wonderful way to eat locally and healthfully.  Last Saturday my girls and I got up early and headed out to Hurkamp Park to sample the goodies.  We had to venture to all the stalls to see what they had.  Fruits and veggies, of course, but also, local honey, cheese, baked goods and lots of flowers.

 

We picked up baby kale, arugula, new potatoes, cucumbers, cheese and an artisan soap from the Wildwood Farm.

 

The next day, we headed out ...

Congratulations to Donna B and her family.  She won the tickets to Fredfest 2012.  The fun takes place at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds from 12-5 Saturday.  A performance by Darryl Worley, a petting zoo, and the King of Wings competition are all part of the activities, plus the Macaroni Kid booth, of course.
